Ad blocking
How Peppermint's built-in ad, tracker and video-ad blocker works, and how to tune it.
Peppermint ships with a built-in blocker for ads, trackers and video ads (including YouTube). The filter engine is compiled off the main thread, so it does not slow down your pages.
Blocking levels
Choose how aggressively Peppermint blocks in Settings → Ad blocking. Medium is the default.
| Level | What it does |
|---|---|
| Light | Blocks classic ad networks and hides obvious ad slots. Leaves the rest of the page alone. |
| Medium | Adds tracker lists, cosmetic filters and scriptlets. Third-party scripts stay allowed unless a filter blocks them. |
| Heavy | Also hides cookie notices and social widgets, and blocks third-party scripts and frames unless a filter explicitly allows them. |
Per-site overrides
Some sites break under strict blocking. Open the site panel for that site and change the level, or pause blocking, for that site only.
Custom filters
Under Custom filters you can add extra filter rules, one per line. They are applied on top of the selected level. Use Update lists to refresh the built-in filter lists on demand.
Using uBlock Origin instead
If the uBlock Origin extension is enabled, the built-in blocker stays idle so the two never conflict. Disable the extension to use Peppermint’s own levels.
